Creating a fairer Britain

On 4 December 2009, Angela Mason was announced as a commissioner for the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
Angela is a recognised champion of equality and human rights, with a varied career within Government roles. Currently she is The National Advisor of Equalities and Cohesion, at the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) and leads on the IDeA's contribution on strategic issues affecting equalities and community cohesion within local government. She is also leading on the development and implementation of the new Equality Framework for Local Government.
She was previously Head of the Women and Equality Unit, then based in the Department for Communities and Local Government. In this post, she was responsible for the Civil Partnership Act and the Equality Act; setting up the Equality and Human Rights Commission, as well as most recently leading a major review of all discrimination law with a view to developing the Single Equality Bill.
Angela is Chair of Fawcett Society and a Patron for the Gay and Lesbian immigration group. She was Director of Stonewall, the UK lesbian and gay rights group, and a Commissioner on the Equal Opportunities Commission.
Angela does not hold any other Ministerial appointments. She declared that she has stood as a candidate, spoken on behalf of and canvassed on behalf of the Labour Party during the past five years when responding to the political activity questionnaire.
