Roles that require 'Police' checks

New law in force

The Equality Act came into force on 1 October 10. Some of the information on this page may be out of date.

There are many jobs where it is necessary for employees to undergo checks by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). As this process involves stating all previous names, and because applications will be checked by the employer, there is a special provision for trans people.

Why can this be a problem?

The process for a Criminal Record Disclosure involves a strict requirement for applicants to state all previous names and aliases. The last page of the form then has to be completed by the ‘Registered Person’ (often the employer themselves) who checks and verifies the contents and the evidence supplied.

This means there can be some anxiety about the implications for trans job applicants and existing staff.

However, there is a special process that can be followed, so that this does not have to be a problem.
