This page details work carried out by members of the Equally Professional network in relation to recruitment and retention.

  • Regional branches organising events on equality and diversity.  Exploring need for Disability Members network (Also relates to Member awareness). The sector has been successful in recruiting BME people. Between 20% and 25% of students on CIH approved courses are from BME backgrounds.

  • The introduction of a positive action programme for BME people has been a commitment for some time. Report commissioned and produced in 2007 on introducing such a scheme.

  • ‘Employment champions’ – case studies in diversity microsite of diversity policies in practice. Publication of ‘Cultural Capital in ...: A Barrier to Diversity’ survey results September 2006.  Publication of ‘The Business of Diversity’ report in October 2006 making the business case for a diverse workforce.
    CIPR
  • Established an online and actual network of professionals committed to encouraging the better representation of BME professionals.  Taskforce to explore issues surrounding the recruitment, retention and working of disabled professionals. The Council is committed to supporting schools in meeting the equalities duties and increasing the representation of BME and disabled teachers, in particular.
    GTCE
  • Monitoring data indicates low recruitment from BME communities. Discussions ongoing with HE courses and employers.  Vacancies on Council advertised with key message about current under-representation.
    ICG
  • Stimulating Physics project piloting activities to encourage under-represented groups to continue with physics to degree level.  Focus groups of BME A level students and telephone interviews with BME physics undergraduates.

  • Guidance and training is provided to law firms who recruit and select as well as to Law Society staff.

  • Research conducted on the feasibility of developing a trainee scheme to encourage more disabled people to embark on a career in housing. (Also relates to Public good)

  • Public engagement team attended a range of festivals in 2007 with a view to rolling out further in 2008. (Also relates to Public good)
