Equality and Human Rights Commission

The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights which was adopted in 1966 and came into force in 1976 complements the International Covenant on Civil and Political rights. The UK ratified this Covenant in 1976.

Submission to the CESCR committee

In April 2009 the Commission prepared a written submission to the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) in relation to the UK Government's performance under the International Covenant Economic, Social and Cultural rights.  The submission focused on a number of areas including:

• Representation of ethnic minorities in public life
• Equal Pay and Career Opportunities
• Welfare Reform and Employment Opportunities
• Disabled Persons and employment:
• Violence against women
• Poverty and Social Exclusion
• Access to adequate and affordable housing
