What the Commission is doing to promote, protect and monitor implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

3 December  -  UN International Day of People with Disabilities

3 December is International Day of People with Disabilities.  Find out how the Commission marked the day in 2010 on our International Day of Disabled Persons 2010 page. 

In 2009, the Commission:

• Announced a formal Inquiry into the actions of public authorities to eliminate the harassment of disabled people
• Published correspondence between the Commission and Secretaries of State concerning their progress on disability equality
• Provided an overview of our work to promote and monitor implementation of the disability Convention (below)

Our Disability Committee and work plan

The Commission's Disability Committee is a statutory committee, set up by an act of parliament, with duties to promote equality, human rights and good relations in respect of ‘disability matters’.

The Commission will carry out a number of specific actions to promote and monitor implementation of the Convention (UNCRPD) including:

• Producing guidance for disabled people and disabled people's organisations about what the Convention can mean to you.
• Working with legal professionals and legal advisors to increase awareness and use of the Convention.
• Host events for disabled people and their organisations to develop understanding of the Convention and develop ways we can work together to implement the Convention in Britain.  (See The Commission in Wales - United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities)
• Actively consider using our Inquiry powers to assess Britain’s compliance with and progress towards implementation of the Convention.
