UN agencies and other international organisations

The Commission periodically engages with UN agencies and other international organisations working on issues within our remit. To date we have primarily worked with the OSCE (particularly in respect of their work on hate crime) and sought to influence the negotiations on reform of the UN gender architecture. Other relevant agencies are also listed for ease of reference.

  • Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE): The OSCE is the world's largest regional security organization, providing a forum for discussion and negotiations on early warning, conflict prevention, crisis management, post-conflict rehabilitation and human rights. EHRC has regular communication with the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). More information can be found at http://www.osce.org/odihr/
  • UN Women, the new United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women was created in June 2010 from the merger of 4 preceding UN agencies working on gender issues. Read the Commission’s position paper on the new gender agency.

  • International Labour Organisation (ILO): The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a UN agency devoted to promoting decent and productive work in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity. Its main aims are to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection and strengthen dialogue in handling work-related issues.   • United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF): UNICEF is an international organisation focusing on children and child rights, with a presence in more than 190 countries and territories.  More  information about UNICEF can be found at www.unicef.org
  • United Nations High Commissioner for refugees (UNHCR): The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. More information on the UNHCR can be found at www.unhcr.org
  • United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC): UNODC is the UN agency working on issues of criminal justice and prison reform, human trafficking and migrant smuggling. More information about UNODC can be found at www.unodc.org
  • United Nations Research Institute on Social Development (UNRISD): The institute engaging in applied research in the field of social development, including equality issues. More information about UNRISD can be found at www.unrisd.org  
  • World Health Organization (WHO): WHO is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. More information about WHO can be found at www.who.int
  • International Organisation for Migration(IOM): The IOM is  the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration promoting international cooperation on Migration and development , facilitating migration, regulating migration, combating forced migration.   • Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) The OECD is an international organisation bringing together  governments committed to democracy and the market economy providing research, forecasting and exchange of best practice on economic and social development issues.
