Equal Marriage Symposium

The Equality and Human Rights Commission, LGBT Youth Scotland and The Equality Network recently hosted a specially convened symposium to discuss Equal Marriage.

As the law stands, same sex couples in the UK can enter into civil partnerships, but marriage is not yet an option.  The law also interferes with both marriage and civil partnership rights of transgender people.  This event aimed to investigate the perceived barriers to equal marriage and to produce a roadmap for legislators as to how to make equal marriage a reality, suggest areas for further consideration and make recommendations for moving forward.

The symposium took place on Thursdsy 27th January at the MacDonald Holyrood Hotel in Edinburgh, and included presentations, panel and group discussions.  Speakers included Professor John Curtice, Shirley-Anne Somerville MSP, Patrick Harvie MSP, Professor Kenneth Norrie, Rev Ian Galloway and Tim Hopkins (Equality Network).

The symposium generated a report detailing the latest developments/research and opinions as regards Equal Marriage in Scotland, based on the presentations and discussions at the symposium event, but also included relevant external research and interviews.
