Capturing the Gains of the Public Sector Duties in Scotland

The Commission in Scotland undertook a program of work in 2008-2009 to look at capturing the gains of the former Public Sector Duties. The project sought to promote good practice that had been developed by public bodies in Scotland in response to the race, gender and disability duties, prior to the introduction of the new Public Sector Equality Duty (2011) which is now in force.

Our objectives for this work were:

  • to collate existing knowledge on good practice held by the legacy commissions
  • to build a set of practice examples covering key elements of all three duties
  • to provide examples of public bodies taking a proactive approach to religion/belief, age and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) equality

The Commission published a report in January 2009 which reviewed the work that public bodies had undertaken in light of the former duties and identifies a range of case studies which illustrate progress.
