Independent Living in Scotland

A project led by disabled people for disabled people to build the capacity of the Independent Living Movement

'Aspirations are fine but rights are better'. That’s one of the key messages of the Independent Living in Scotland project which will launch on 23 March 2009 in Edinburgh.

‘Independent living means disabled people of all ages having the same freedom, choice, dignity and control as other citizens at home, at work, and in the community. It does not mean living by yourself or fending for yourself. It means rights to practical assistance and support to participate in society and live an ordinary life.’

This is the definition of independent living, developed by disabled people, and adopted by the Independent Living in Scotland project.

  • Inspire - inspiring all disabled people and the Independent Living Movement plus politicians, policy makers, service communities and organisations.
  • Involve - involving all disabled people in developing the policies and services that impact on them.
  • Invest - investing in the Independent Living Movement, and in people, communities and services to make a better society for everyone in Scotland.

That’s our goal.

The Independent Living in Scotland project is being hosted by the Commission up to March 2011. It aims to build the capacity of the Independent Living Movement in Scotland to help transform the lives of disabled people.  The project is backed by £372,000 from the Scottish Government.

The project involves a wide range of disabled people and their organisations to strengthen and develop the Independent Living Movement in Scotland and to support the involvement of disabled people in shaping the Scottish Government’s approach.
