Dealing with the Police

New law in force

The Equality Act came into force on 1 October 2010. Some of the information on this page may be out of date.

Police forces are public authorities, and have the same duties as other public authorities to respect human rights, prevent discrimination and promote equality.

Many police powers and obligations are laid down by codes of conduct, rather than by equality legislation or human rights laws.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) deals with complaints and conducts matters against police officers and staff in England and Wales. Read more about the Police Code of Conduct on the Independent Police Complaints Commission website.

In Scotland, a similar function is exercised by the Police Complaints Commissioner for Scotland and a guide for making complaints can be found here.
