The Equality and Human Rights Commission today announced the appointment of Sheila Kumar to the role of Interim Group Director, Regulation. Sheila joins the Commission from the Ministry of Justice on 26 April on a 12 month secondment.

As a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) the Commission is bound by Cabinet Office guidance on its conduct and role during election campaigns. We will be reducing the extent of our external communications during the pre-election period to avoid the risk of being perceived to be supporting or promoting partisan views.

The Commission today welcomed the passing of the Equality Bill, which has now received Royal Assent. It contains a series of measures for tackling inequalities which the Commission considers will help Britain to become a fairer society.

Two Polish workers have been awarded a total of £25,000 in an employment tribunal case against a Perthshire fruit picking company. The tribunal found against David Leslie Fruits on the grounds of race discrimination, dismissal for asserting a statutory right and unlawful deductions from wages.
